Digha
Digha is the most-frequented seaside retreat in West Bengal with
a fabulous 6km beach. A quiet little place, it is especially for
those who wish to escape the bright lights of the city.
The place tends to be busy during summer holidays so it is best
to book in advance. There is very little to do except take pleasant
walks, swim and loll on the beach though you might find the sun
too strong during the day.
We suggest that you stay indoors in a/c comfort during the day
if it's summer and venture out only before dawn and after dusk.
Look at the bright side, haven’t you always wanted to go for a moonlight
swim! Besides, the fantastic variety of fish and seafood will have
you returning for more. In case you feel the need to go sightseeing,
there are some interesting excursions from Digha like Shankarpur
(a fishing hamlet 10km away) and Chandaneshwar (a temple 7km across
the Orissa border).

The Fort Radisson
A colonial-era fort built in 1783, Raichak Fort was reconstructed
to serve as a compelling romantic retreat in Shyamolina. A treat
for Raj lovers, it is located at a curve along the Hooghly River
and is about an hour’s drive from Calcutta.
Equipped with five-star facilities, it offers many indoor and outdoor
activities including angling, archery, pistol shooting, tennis,
croquet, golf, boating, yoga and aerobics. Of course you can make
up for the calorie loss by indulging yourself at the Continental
and Indian restaurants, the coffee shop, the sundowner bar and the
poolside snacketaria. For those who’d rather be than do, there’s
nothing like passing the time of the day relaxing in your private
balcony that overlooks the legendary Hooghly.
Room prices range from Rs 3,000 for a double to Rs 2,800 for a
single.

Sundarbans National Park
This may not be your idea of a relaxed weekend, but a cruise in
the Sunderbans can be a stunningly fantastic break from the usual
wear and tear of urban living. In fact, all you people in Calcutta
are plain lucky to have an opportunity like that lurking, literally,
in your backyard.
This 2,606 sq km park is the world’s largest estuarine mangrove
forest and a Project Tiger reserve too. Look out for royal Bengal
tigers, rhesus monkeys, spotted deer, civets, estuarine crocodiles
and many other species.
This is the kind of place you’ll enjoy visiting with a bunch of
friends but do be prepared to rough it out a bit. It is best to
take an organized tour from Calcutta to Kalighat (a three hour journey)
and a one-day cruise from Kalighat to Sunderbans. If you wish to
sail in comfort and stay aboard overnight, MV Chitralekha is your
best bet. However, smaller vessels operate on this circuit too from
places like Canning, Gosaba and Basanti.

Shantiniketan
Shantiniketan is mainly known for the university set up by the
great nationalist and Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Set amidst
sprawling fields, mango groves and forested land, Shantiniketan
is a feast for the eyes. It is located in the Birbhum district of
West Bengal known for its red soil which makes the landscape rather
dramatic. The best time to visit Shantiniketan is from November
to March. You can go out for picnics and explore the lovely countryside.
In fact, March is the time for the annual Holi Mela and the festival
of the Bauls (folk singers who travel from village to village begging
for food.)
A visit to Shantiniketan is a capsule course on the great nationalist's
life. It also gives you an opportunity to view the splendid sculptures,
frescoes, murals and paintings of Rabindranath Tagore, Nandlal Bose,
Ramkinkar Baij, Bindobehari Mukhopadhyaya and other masters. This
could be a great place to take your kids too - an initiation into
the finer things of life!
