Pondicherry A destination with the potential offering - something to everybody. Within easy reach from Chennai, it is simply ideal for beach bums, history lovers, culture freaks, water babies and those on a spiritual quest. Pondicherry was a French colony before it became a part of the Indian Republic and the influence is still apparent in the architecture and fluency with which the locals speak French. The city's greatest claim to fame, however, is the Aurobindo Ashram and Auroville, an international experiment in community living. You can ramble through the ashram, the museums, the gardens, watch the dolphins in the sea or just picnic on the beach. Or better still, just go shopping - you can pick up anything from hand-crafted dolls made from terracotta, papier-mâché and plaster-of-paris to silk, perfumes, handmade paper, rugs, pottery, bronze and leather. Stay At Coonor If you are looking for a quieter, less touristy alternative to Ooty, Coonoor is the answer to your prayer. A charming hideaway, this is where you can spend time with your beloved away from prying eyes. Though home to many prominent public schools, it is fairly secluded in summer as the kids go home for their holidays. You can pass the day drinking in the view, taking a walk, wading into natural pools or sauntering through the fruit and vegetable show held here every May. While there, you can pick up your year’s supply of honey and a rare variety of coffee called Robusta. Stay At Ooty Ooty or Udhagamandalam, if one is politically correct, serves as a refreshing retreat for those escaping the oppressive summer heat of South India. North Indians, however, buzz off to it during winter to escape the severe cold. Perched at a height of 2,268m, Ooty is known for its natural beauty, the tranquil Ooty Lake and temples. A popular honeymoon destination, it has some fine hotels, restaurants and watering holes. What’s more you can combine decadent indoor pleasures with strenuous activities like trekking, boating and swimming. Something for everybody, huh? Stay At Kodaikanal Kodaikanal,or Kodai as it is popularly known, is a serene hill station in the Palani Hills of Tamil Nadu. A great romantic getaway, Kodai is at its best in the months from April to June. Wooded hills, pleasant walks, glistening waterfalls and a mesmerisingly beautiful lake could be the highlights of your visit to this retreat. Apart from nature, you can take in the temples, mosques, churches, museums, rock formations and ancient caves. The Kodai Summer Festival, known for its exciting boat race and exquisite flower show, is held every May so you could easily catch it. If you are a gardening enthusiast, don’t miss the country’s best orchidorium which grows more than 300 species of orchids. Stay At Kodai International Chidambaram The original of the Nataraja (Dancing Shiva) image you might have seen all across India and especially in handicrafts stores can be seen at the Nataraja Temple in Chidambaram. The town and all its activities spin around the temple so visit
it only if you are a devout Hindu at heart. Kids may find it boring
and even adults feel at a loss once they have visited the temple
and dutifully admired the stonework and architecture. Chidambaram
is indeed the archetypal South Indian temple town. It is simply
perfect for older people on a pilgrimage. However an interesting getaway from here comes in the shape of the seaside retreat of Pichavaram. Pichavaram is known for its backwaters and mangroves and a trip there will leave you rejuvenated and gasping at the breathtaking green you'll get to see. Stay At |
